Doctor of biological sciences, professor, academician, founder and the first rector of Haybusak University Levon Harutyunyan would be 90 years old. The 90th anniversary events dedicated to Levon Harutyunyan started a month ago. Roundtables, memorial evenings, conferences and a unique flash mob of book donation were organised during which all the libraries of Yerevan were replenished with dozens of books by Levon Harutyunyan, including the two-volume book “The Flora of Artsakh”, which was highly appreciated by the public.
The events dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the academician were summed up in a concert program at Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall. The event was attended by officials, prominent figures in the field of culture, education and science, some of whom personally knew the academician, communicated, worked and made friends with him – all of them treasured their memoirs.
Levon Mkrtchyan, Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia, said that he also treasured many recollections of scientist Harutyunyan but instead of retelling them Levon Mkrtchyan preferred to highlight his human qualities. “Today we celebrate not only the 90th anniversary of the scientist, but also the man who had the mindset of a true citizen. From the early days of those stormy years of the independence of Armenia, the Artsakh movement, he joined Dashnaktsutyun and was able to show his clear approach of an Armenian intellectual. He is an outstanding scientist whose textbooks are still being used at our universities. By the way, he was one of the firsts to start an environmental movement for new generations in the aspect of science.”
On the occasion of this remarkable day the descendants of the scientist have received numerous congratulation messages from educational and scientific organisations of Armenia and abroad, colleagues and the students of the scientist.
Levon Harutyunyan is the author of more than 400 research papers, about 400 essays, popular science articles, 40 monographs, manuscripts, method manuals and dictation handbooks. His outstanding works include “Phytotherapy”, “Amusing Botany”, “Travelling to Unknown Natural Landmarks”, “Nature of Armenia – its Protection and Enrichment” and “The Encyclopedia of the Gardner”. He also authored books on greening Yerevan. His scientific contribution is great in the field of dendroflora, ecology, landscaping, medicinal herbs. Thanks to him, tens of thousands of trees were planted on our Mother Nature. He was a kind and doting protector of our Mother Nature.
Nature was a perfect harmony for the scientist but as it was revealed during the evening the multitalented scientist had other gifts as well – among them painting. The great artist Martiros Saryan seeing L. Harutyunyan’s paintings and greening projects called him “The Architect of Nature.”
