LEVON HARUTYUNYAN’S 90th ANNIVERSARY WAS CELEBRATED WITH GREAT FESTIVITY

Levon Harutyunyan, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, academician, founder and first rector of Haybusak University, would have turned 90 years old. The jubilee events of the 90th anniversary of the great academician launched weeks ago: round tables, memorial evenings, conferences and a unique flash-mob of book donations, during which all the libraries of Yerevan were replenished with dozens of books authored by Levon Harutyunyan, including the two-volume “Flora of Artsakh”, which was highly appreciated by the public. The jubilee year of the 90th anniversary of the academician was summed up with a concert program in Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall. The evening was attended by many high-rank men, prominent figures in the field of culture, education and science, who personally knew L. Harutyunyan, communicated, worked with him and made friends with the academician, thus bringing their own memories to the event. RA Minister of Education and Science Levon Mkrtchyan said that he also had many memories of L. Harutyunyan, however, instead of telling his memories, he preferred to emphasize his individual characteristics: “Today we celebrate not only the 90th anniversary of the multi-talented scientist, but also the memory of a man who was a citizen by nature. In the first days of Armenia’s independence, from the beginning of the Artsakh movement, he also joined the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Party and during those stormy years he was able to show the Armenian intellectual trait with a clear stance. L. Harutyunyan is a prominent scientist whose textbooks are still used in our universities. By the way, he was one of the first for the upcoming generations who, from the scientific standpoint, started the ecological movement.”

On the occasion of the memorable day, the scientist’s heirs also received many congratulations, both from Armenia and from educational and scientific organizations abroad, as well as from the scientist’s colleagues and students. Levon Harutyunyan is the author of more than 400 researches, about 400 essays, popular articles, 40 monographs, manuscripts, methodological and dictation manuals. His outstanding works include “Phytotherapy”, “Fun Botany”, “Journey to Hidden Places of Nature”, “Nature of Armenia and its Preservation and Enrichment” and “Encyclopedia of Gardeners”. He also authored books on landscaping in Yerevan. His scientific contribution is great in the field of dendroflora, ecology, landscaping, and medicinal herbs. Thanks to him, tens of thousands of trees have been planted in Armenia and he is the kind and beloved guardian of our nature. Although the nature was perfect harmony for the scientist, during the evening it was revealed that the versatile scientist also had a great talent for painting. Seeing L. Harutyunyan’s paintings and landscaping projects, the great painter Martiros Saryan, called him an architect of nature.
