The training course was conducted in the frames of the Erasmus+ SAFEMED+ project, aiming to facilitate the processes of development and improvement of OSCE examines in partner universities. The main objective of the training was to observe the OSCE in real-time at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela – Computer-based exam part and the Final part of OSCE (consultations at stations in the clinic) and discuss Post-hoc analysis and dissemination of processes.
During the first part of day one of training (Facilitators: Andrius Klimašauskas, Víctor Manuel Arce Vázquez), participants observed the Computer-based examination part when Alvaro Hermida Ameijeiras presented and explained how questions were conducted, what type of questions are given to students during the exam and what results are expected. Later on, Andrius Klimašauskas (M.D., Associated professor, Vilnius University) presented a Computer-based part of the OSCE at Vilnius University, which is very similar to USC with some differences. During both presentations, participants raised questions and discussed the adaptation of given examples to their University examinations.
The second part was dedicated for workshop in Medical Simulation Center (Facilitators: Tsisana Lomashvili, Tbilisi Medical Academy; Daniel Rey, Chair of Medical Education Semergen-University of Santiago de Compostela). Manuel Portela (Chair of Medical Education Semergen-University of Santiago de Compostela) and Irene Espasandín (Chair of Medical Education Semergen-University of Santiago de Compostela) showed around the simulation lab, equipped with four training rooms, simulation mannequins, and staff to lead the processes. Later, participants visited Hospital Clinico Universitario de Santiago where Dr. Sergio Cinza and Prof. Víctor Arce showed how the practical stations were prepared for the last part of OSCE and answered questions about allocation of staff, required administrative and academic resources, different groups of supporting staff, administration of all process.
During the second day (Facilitators: Víctor Manuel Arce Vázquez, Alvaro Hermida Ameijeiras), all participants attended the practical part of OSCE at Hospital Clinico Universitario de Santiago. Each delegation member had an opportunity to see how students go through all the prepared stations for consultations. There were eight stations (PC, CPR, Gynecology, Pediatry, Surgery, Psychology, Trauma, NML); in each was an observer of consultation and, in some, a patient-actor. Different scenarios were prepared for each station, so going through all the cabinets, students had to consult patients with various problems.
Participants visited CIMUS (Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases) on the last day. After the welcome speech of María José López Couso, Vice-chancellor’s office for Degrees and Internationalization, Prof. Víctor Manuel Arce and Dr. Sergio Cinza presented a Post-hoc analysis of OSCE (Facilitators: Tetiana Kovalchuk, Horbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University and José Costoya, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela). Participants discussed the experience of organisation of the process for OSCE examination and their thoughts about responsibilities and requirements for coordinators, examiners and administrative support. Analised some issues about writing clinical situations, recruiting and training of actors-patients. Presentations of speakers also touched on topics about scoring, assessment and checklists. After participating in the practical part of OSCE, visitors discussed methods of development of blueprint, allocation of specific points for each type of learning outcome, distribution of total points between stations, etc.
After the break, M.D. Akaki Sepashvili from the Tbilisi Medical Academy presented material about disseminating the project and further activities and discussed it with the project participants. Later Sergio Cinza showed some issues about the Quality assurance of OSCE and what should be done according to the timeline of the project (Facilitators: Nino Gakhokidze, David Tvildiani Medical University, Víctor Arce, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela)
The training was closed with thankful words by Vice-Rector of Tbilisi State Medical University Khatuna Todadze, Prof. Ia Avaliani and Prof. Víctor Arce. Prof. Ia Avaliani commented on upcoming steps and meetings and appreciation towards the host university and organizers.
All the materials presented during the training, such as PPTs, cases, checklists, etc., are shared with participants and available to all academic communities within universities.
